This page is intended to be a resource for parents with children 5 and under in age. After a couple of years of kindergarten screening we have noted that a some students could use specific learning in certain areas for kindergarten readiness. We have included links to learning videos and printable resources.
Alphabet
Saying vs. Singing: A majority of parents teach kids to sing the alphabet. The rhythm helps students memorize the letters in order. When students are screened they are asked to site the alphabet without singing. Don't be afraid to ask them to say the letters without singing them.
Letter Identification: Students will be asked to identify letters in a random order for the screening. Magnetic letters are a great tool. Teach your child to point at the letters as they say them. Start with just a few letters at a time like A-E. Once they have the A-E add F-J. Then practice pointing at any random letter A-E to see if your child can identify without needing to say them in order. Once they become comfortable with this process, arrange the letters in a random order on the fridge and ask your child to identify the letters. See Magnetic Letter Fun Video below.

Identification
Personal Information: Your students will be asked if they know:
- First, Middle and Last Name
- Birthday: month/day
- Address
- Age
- Street address
Writing
- Your child will be asked to print their first and last name. It is important to begin kids writing by holding their utensil the correct way.
- Click below to see a video to teach your child how to hold a pencil the correct way.
- Draw simple shapes: your child will be shown 4 shapes and asked to replicate them. Draw a X on a sheet of paper and have your student work on tracing it then make their own. They should be able to draw squares, rectangles and diamonds (kites)
- The buttons below will take you to writing videos and information sheets.
Here is our tip for reading. Find books (age appropriate) that your child finds interest in. Let them explore the pictures before reading and make guesses on what is going to happen. Then begin reading to them. As you read, slide your finger under the words so your child learns to read left to right and where to begin on the next line. Read often!
Math Readiness
Shapes: Color, Size and Shape
- Your student should be able to sort squares (big and small blue and red) and circles (big and small, blue and red). Some small blue of each and some small red of each.
- Students should be able to put all the big objects in a pile (whether a circle or square) and all of the small square and circles in one pile.
- Students should be able to put all of the red (big and small) and all of the blue objects (big and small) in two seperate piles.
